 December 25th is being celebrated the world over as Jesus Christ's birthday, even though it was the pagan Festival of Lights celebrated in all the nations long before the first advent of Jesus Christ.

 It was THE GREAT AMALGAMATOR, The Church of Rome that amalgamated the Christian and the pagan practices.  

Over three hundred years AFTER Christ's birth, Rome made the 25th of December ... CHRISTMAS ... A MASS OF CHRIST. 

"December 25 was already a major festival in the pagan Roman world, the Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, or "Birthday of the Unconquered Sun," falling within the week-long celebration of the Saturnalia, a feast honoring the renewal of the sun at the winter solstice." Encyclopedia International, Leixcon Publications, 1981, Vol.4, page 414.

 The woman and child relationship depicted in the nativity scenes goes back to Baal and Semiramis, and is part of the mysterious rites of Babylon. 

The Christmas TREE is world-over, and in Israel the prophet Jeremiah painted it PAGAN.   

"Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.  For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the ax.  They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good." (Jeremiah 10:1-5)

I.  The Witness Of A Missionary

The former missionaries in Nepal, The Boehms, wrote in their letter for November 1988, about Dasai the biggest festival of Hinduism.

 "Dasai is when they sacrifice the water buffalo calves, take the big tika marks and give gifts.  Also every home will sacrifice a goat, and those who have cars or motorcycles will sacrifice a goat to their car, and put the blood on their vehicles (all over).  Several of our neighbors passed us on the road during Dasai and told us that this was their Christmas.  Another neighbor asked us, isn't your Dasai coming up soon?  We have heard this often.  They are always taken back when we tell them that we don't celebrate Christmas.  Of course, we don't tell them that we don't celebrate it because it is just like their pagan holidays.  We just tell them that it is Roman Catholic, which it is.  (See Encyclopedia Britainica under Christmas.)  We happened to be out shopping for a birthday present for Matthew during the Dasai shopping time, and it was just like Christmas in the USA.  The streets and the shops were filled with shoppers, and they were all in a hurry.  Did you know that W.B. Riley preached against Christmas and Easter?  He was one of our great Baptist preachers of the past, and author of about forty-eight volumes.  He also founded Northwestern Bible School, College, and Seminary, and was a "real" Fundamentalist.  Dr. Harry Ironside, pastor of the Moody Memorial Church in the early 1900's, also preached against Christmas.  Martin Luther preached against Christmas.  The Puritan Bible-believing influence prevailed for a long time in America, and Christmas wasn't accepted actually until the 19th century.  We expect the Hindus to leave their ungodly pagan festivals when they get saved, yet we aren't willing to even think about leaving ours, or even doing a little investigating (study) to see if they are right or not.  Is there any verse in the NT that admonishes us to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus?"

I. The BOOK Identifies The Seat Of Satan

There can be seen in God's word some things that a man can spend all his life looking for and never find elsewhere.   The only way any one of us can find out if something in this world is right, and pure, and true, ... is to find and take God's opinion concerning that thing.  Be like the Bereans!  

"These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." (Acts 17:11)  

Now if we approach the Book with a believing heart and with the eyes of faith, then the Spirit of God will "open" His Book to us. 

For example, if we turn to Revelation chapter 2, we will find the bizarre and the strange.  Look at verses 12 & 13

"And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; these things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; I know thy works and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth."  

Do you see that?  Satan has on this earth ... a seat.  And for some reason the Devil had picked Pergamos in Asia Minor as his throne.

Now how long do you think it's been his throne or "seat" on this earth? 

History will provide us with the answer, that is, if we are willing to learn from history.

To get our historical account right on this matter of Satan's seat, we must go to Genesis chapter eleven, and see the bizarre and the strange once again.  Mystery Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the earth has had its roots going all the way back to the first generation after the world-wide flood of Noah's day.

II. The Record Of Nimrod: Molech And Baal

"And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.  He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said,  Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.  And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar."  (Genesis 10:8-10) 

Nimrod built Babylon, and led the effort to build the tower of Babel ... TO MAKE A NAME. 

"And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." (Verse 4)   

This Nimrod was a mighty hunter of men, a HUNTER OF THE SOULS OF MEN!  

Nimrod then, was the paid agent of the Devil, and the two of them formed an unholy alliance. 

Nimrod was the builder of Babylon, and was also the inventor of a supernatural super cult that claimed to possess the highest wisdom, and to reveal the divinest secrets.  

A "mystical priesthood" was formed and Babylon became "the seat of Satan".   Nimrod and his priesthood were up to no good!  

"And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.”  (Verse 6)  

Every evil cult now in the world has flowed from this one original CULT.    God judged it so ... and put a delaying action on the work of Satan by the confusion of the tongues.  

 "Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth." (Verse 9) 

Just check it out in the histories of the nations, and of their gods.  Assyria, Egypt, Greece and Rome can trace their gods to Babylon.   Baal, Molech, Chemosh, Ashtoreth, Tammuz and Milcom are the references to this satanic system that we can find in the Bible. 

"For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.   And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father.   Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon." (1 Kings 11:5-7)  

 "Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the LORD'S house which was toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz."  (Ezekiel 8:14) 

This system of Mystery Babylon God HATES, for it is REBELLION, and He commanded His people Israel to stay clear of it.  (Leviticus 18:21) "And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD."  

Babylon was the first seat of Satan.  And after the fall of the Babylonian and the Medo-Persian Empires "the seat of Satan" moved to Pergamos.  From Pergamos it went to Rome.   Let me me quote Clarence Larkin at this point.   "When Attalus, the Pontiff or "High Priest", died in B.C. 133, he bequeathed the Headship of the "Babylonian Priesthood" to Rome.  When the Etruscans came to Italy from Lydia (the region of Pergamos), they brought with them the Babylonian religion and rites. They set up a Pontiff who was head of the Priesthood.  Later the Romans accepted this Pontiff as their civil ruler. Julius Caesar was made Pontiff of the Etruscan Order in B.C. 74.  In B.C. 63 he was made "Supreme Pontiff" of the "Babylonian Order", thus becoming heir to the rights and titles of Attalus, Pontiff of Pergamos, who had made Rome his heir by will. 

Thus the first Roman Emperor became the Head of the "Babylonian Priesthood", and Rome the successor of Babylon. The Emperors of Rome continued to exercise the office of "Supreme Pontiff" until A.D. 376, when the Emperor Gratian, for Christian reasons, refused it.  The Bishop of the Church at Rome, Damascus, was elected to the position.  He had been Bishop 12 years, having been made Bishop in A.D.  366, through the influence of the monks of Mt. Carmel, a college of Babylonian religion originally founded by the priests of Jezebel.  So in A.D. 378 the Head of the "Babylonian Order" became the Ruler of the "Roman Church". 

Thus Satan united Rome and Babylon in one religious system."  1. Dispensational Truth, Clarence Larkin, 1918, page 140

Trees ... Trees ... Trees! 

Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. 

"And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance." (Deuteronomy 21:22-23)

"Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:" (Galatians 3:13) 

III. The Witness Of The Heart's Fascination With The Groves And Green Trees!

"Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God." (Leviticus 26:1)

If you are in St.Louis, Missouri, and heading east on Interstate 55, you will see this sign: National Shrine Of Our Lady Of Snows.  This Roman Catholic GROVE is located just over the Mississippi River near Belleville, Illinois.  

How many times in Scripture do we find this recorded?     

"And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree:" (2 Kings 17:10)  

"For they also built them high places, and images, and groves, on every high hill, and under every green tree." (1 Kings 14:23)  

"For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down, and he reared up altars for Baalim, and made groves, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them." (II Chronicles 33:3)  

Is not this thing peculiar to you?  Does not the human heart hold some secret inclination for hills or "high places”.  

Listen, my friend, the heart of man is incurably very religious, and is just like the moth flying in the night, and drawn to the bright light.  The heart is so prone to this thing! 

"And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass." (2 Chronicles 24:18)  

That old erring human heart tends to FORGET GOD!  "And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves." (Judges 3:7)  

This will always bring a collision.  God's wrath always brings God's judgment!   

"And I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee: so will I destroy thy cities." (Micah 5:14) 

"Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table." (1 Kings 18:19) 

God's prophets command the people to get rid of those images, and all those trees of their groves.   "But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:"

IV. The Witness Of The Snow ... And The Cold Of Winter!

"Do thy diligence to come before winter." (II Timothy 4:21a) 

The Apostle Paul was very concerned that Timothy, make it to him BEFORE winter.  In verse 13, we find that Paul wanted the cloak that he left in Troas.  There were some books he wanted also.  But even more important than the books, and his cloak, was the parchments.  He especially wanted the parchments BEFORE winter. 

He knew if he were to receive these items BEFORE winter at young Timothy's hand, that Timothy would have to make it fast, that is, be diligent in making the journey because WINTER was coming.  Paul knew from real experience that everything in the Roman world comes to a standstill in the winter months.   

"And it may be that I will abide, yea, and winter with you, that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go." (I Corinthians 16:6)  "When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter." (Titus 3:12) 

Jesus Christ commanded his disciples to pray that their flight be not in WINTER.  

"But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:" (Matthew 24:20)   "And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter." (Mark 13:18)  

The Mediterranean shipping lanes would be shut down, and all the ships would winter in safe harbors for the duration of the cold months of the year.

"And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west."   (Acts 27:12)   

"And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux." (Acts 28:11) 

The time for armies to fight was in the summer.  The time for governments to order their citizens to travel back to their cities of birth for taxation ... was in the summer ... not in the WINTER. 

 "And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.  And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David.)  To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child."  (Luke 2:1-5)  

Snow would blanket the whole Roman world even the land of Israel would see the visitation of the white stuff.  The Bible testifies amply of SNOW, and the presence of snow in Israel.    

"Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him."  (Jeremiah 36:22)  "Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he slew two lionlike men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day." (I Chronicles 11:22) 

"And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he slew two lionlike men of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow." (II Samuel 23:20) 

The witness of history gives us a picture of the shepherds in the hills of Judea gathering the flocks of sheep from the summer fields to be sheltered in the barns and stalls each fall in order to escape the harshness of the winter.  This is the testimony of the shepherds concerning the time of Christ's birth.   They testify that it was not in the winter when Jesus Christ was born, because the shepherds themselves were NOT in the fields in the winter. 

"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over the flocks by night." (Luke 2:8)

V.  The Scriptures Timetable For The Seven Feasts Of The Lord

The Feast Of The Passover

The Feast Of Unleavened Bread

The Feast Of First Fruits

The Feast Of Pentecost

The Feast Of Trumpets

The Feast Of The Day of Atonement

The Feast Of Tabernacles

In Leviticus 23 there is given by God to Israel his plan for the feasts of the LORD (Vs. 2). 

The Feasts Of the LORD were to foreshadow things to come in the future.  These feasts were to be celebrated according to the Jewish calendar with the first three to be kept in the first month. 

The first feast of  "The Lord's Passover" (Verse 5) was to point to the cross of Calvary, and to the N.T. salvation and the redemption by the blood of The Lamb of God.   

"Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:" (I Corinthians 5:7) 

(Remember, the first month on the Hebrew calendar is our third month on the Julian calendar.) 

The second feast, "the feast of unleavened bread" follows the next day after the Passover (Verse 6), and is to be associated by type to the N.T. believer's consecrated walk of separation from this world.  

The third feast in that same first month, seven days later, is the feast "of the first fruits" of the harvest (Verse 10).   According, to I Corinthians 15:20, "Christ is risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept."  This feast pictures the conquering of death by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 

The fourth feast comes with a pause in time in the third month.  It is the feast of Pentecost, "ye number fifty days" later (Verse 16).  The day of Pentecost is when the Holy Ghost came in Acts 2.  The Jew and the Gentile are in "one body", the church. 

 "Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:  To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:"  (Colossians 1:26-27)

Now comes a great span of time beginning at the feast of Pentecost in the third month to the seventh month, and the Feast of Trumpets. 

"Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a Sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation." (Verse 24) 

The blowing of the trumpets signals the end of the time of the Gentiles and the calling of Jews back to the land of Israel.  The Church is taken out and the seven years of The Tribulation begin.  Ten days later is "the feast of the day of atonement" (Verse 27) which points to the second coming of Jesus Christ to set up his millennial kingdom on this earth. 

The last feast in this same month (the seventh month) begins on the "fifteenth day" and goes for eight days.  It is "the feast of tabernacles" and Israel is shown to have entered into his rest.

VI. Then When Was Jesus Christ Born?

          Jesus Christ was 33 1/2 years old when he was crucified at the third Passover after his ministry began. The Scripture plainly shows us that Jesus had just turned thirty years of age when the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove on him when John baptized him. 

"And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age---." (Luke 3:23) 

His ministry lasted forty-two months or three and one-half years.   

          Before the first of the three Passovers, that the Bible records of Jesus' ministry on this earth the following events occurred in that six months.   "And the Jews' Passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem," (John 2:13)

1. The baptism of Jesus (John 1:29-34)

2. The calling of his disciples (John 1:35-51)

3. The marriage at Cana (John 2:1-12)

          The Jew's Passover was in the SPRING of the year, and that is when He was crucified on Mt. Calvary, therefore Jesus Christ's birth occurred 33 1/2 years earlier in the FALL of the year. 

The shepherds were STILL out in the fields as the Scripture testified. 

One of the FEASTS of the LORD, the FEAST OF PASSOVER, marked the time of Christ's DEATH and RESURRECTION, and it follows that one of the FEASTS of the LORD, the Feast of TABERNACLES marked the time of Jesus Christ's BIRTH.    

Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem in obedience to the order of the Roman government to be taxed in the SUMMER.  God's word gives this witness.  

"And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."   (Luke 2:6-7)  Jesus Christ was born in the fall, and I believe according to the schedule offered by the FEASTS of the Lord, and in particular to one FEAST, the FEAST of Tabernacles, in the month of September.

 VII. Why The December 25th Festival Is Not A Matter Of Romans 14

          There are Christians who say they can justify their wholehearted participation in the observance of the festival of Christmas by going to the text of Romans chapter fourteen.  They reason it this way.   Christmas can be one of those activities in life that can be included in the list of "doubtful" things that are not worthy of argument.  They point to verse four as showing that "esteeming" December 25th as Christ's birthday above another day in the year as being merely a freedom of personal choice. 

 "Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind." 

They say, "After all, it is a personal thing between the believer and the LORD."  "He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it."  (Verse 6a) 

In regard to the practice of having the Christmas tree in our homes, I can remember one preacher's defense of his having a TREE all brilliantly decorated in his home.  He said the text of Jeremiah 10 indicated that Israel had indeed a problem with idolatry, but "that he himself had no problem in his heart with the Christmas tree ... because he was just enjoying it, and not idolizing it."   (Maybe we need to remember another place given in Jeremiah---.

 "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9.)  Therefore, to many Christians, it is a matter not subject to judgment by others as to what a person does with the observance of the festival of Christmas.  "But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ." (Verse 10)

Truly, Romans 14 does have application in a believer's life.  I do not question that.  Certainly the questions of what a believer does with foods (verse 2) and with particuliar days (verse 5) are important, and need the light of the word of God to instruct the believer to as to how he or she needs to walk in order to keep the proper relationship with other believers in the local church. 

God is showing here that there is nothing inherently wrong with any food and that no particuliar day is innately evil.  December 25th is not any more of an evil day than any other day in the year.  Indeed, in Matthew six we find in the last verse this truth. 

"Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." 

However, we need to understand that even though no particular day in the year is any more evil than another, that certain days have associated with them by schedule certain activities, observances and rites THAT ARE EVIL. 

 If all the evidence ...both in God's word and in the historical facts ... show that December 25th is of pagan origin, and can be traced back to Nimrod and to a time that is within one generation of the Flood of Genesis, and to what happened at Babel in the eleventh chapter, then we will be guilty if we partake of the observance of Christmas by virtue of the association, and linkage, or common bond, that we will have with UNBELIEVERS. 

 In II Corinthians six we see the command of God to the BELIEVERS at Corinth. 

 "Now for a recompense in the same, (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged.   Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?   And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?  And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.   Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. (II Corinthians 6:13-18)

VIII. Conclusion.

We are on the threshold of the end of the dispensation of the church.  Perilous times have come.  The Christians in the former days of our nation actually believed Christmas was a wicked observance.  

"However, during the Commonwealth, the English Puritans, repelled by both the pagan practices and the religious ceremonies, forbade any religious or secular celebration of Christmas. The English celebration returned with the restoration of the Stuarts, but Christian observances were still outlawed in Puritan New England for many years: and not until the 19th century did Christmas become a legal holiday in America." Encyclopedia International, Lexicon Publications, 1981, Vol.4, Page 414. 

America in the 19th century got pulled into the spiritual darkness by the observance or by the participation in Christmas.         

The argument for the adoption of this pagan Christmas holiday ... as being harmless to us ... is FALSE. 

To say we can make Christmas to honor Jesus Christ, and to reach the lost with the message of His birth on December 25th, is WRONG! 

Yes, Preach Christ to THE LOST on any day in the year, but do not make a LIE about December 25th being Jesus' birthday.  It never has been right to do WRONG, in order to do RIGHT.  It flies in the face of biblical truth. 

Remember this, something that flows from Satanic origins (paganism) is a SOURCE from a poisoned well.  This poisoned well is what we, as a nation, have been drinking from for a long, long, time, and has entered into our national reasoning. 

          The truth is that SIN will drive you crazy!  You DO believe this, ... DON'T YOU? 

"Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.   Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.   Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen." (Romans 1:21-25) 

When we turned away from the BIBLICAL principles and convictions of our English forefathers of New England, and accepted the Roman Catholic religious Festival of Christmas, a leavening process was begun.   The leavening of Popery is well nigh finished in our nation today.  

 "A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump" (Galatians 5:9).

"Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners," (I Corinthians 15:33).   

"Mystery Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the earth" gave us the Christmas Festival as her substitution and replacement of the genuine time when Jesus Christ came to this earth.
