The Gospel of JohnAll Men Shall Know

John 13:31 “Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.
37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.”

1. Him In Himself

Verse thirty-one and thirty-two: “Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.”

When the Spirit of God repetitively speaks on something that is important to HIM [God] [in the word of God], it is, therefore, something that is real important for us to understand, or if it is something not totally understandable then we need to at least

BELIEVE it.

Here, we are once again in the Gospel of John where the Holy Ghost pounds with the steady work of the hammer in the very hearts and souls of men the great TRUTH that “the Son of man” … is GOD come in the flesh.

Do you see what I see in verse thirty-two?

It is the Spirit of God saying that God the Father is glorified “in him” Who is “the Son of man.”

It is also the Spirit of God saying that God the Father shall glorify “him” WHO is the “the Son of man” WHO is inside Himself.

Let’s read it again. “If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself.”

It is the very DEITY of Jesus Christ shown here in verse thirty-one. There is no one [not one of us] who in the end will be able to escape this mandated conclusion by the Holy Ghost.

You will either acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Jehovah now or you will testify to this later at the White Throne judgment. I would rather give HIM the glory now. What about you? This is what I did in October, 1973 when I got saved. Amen!

Turn to the book of Philippians chapter two, verse nine. We will read from there. “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” [Philippians 2:9-11]

Now notice the last part of that verse in our text. [This is verse thirty-two of John.], “and shall straightway glorify him.”

God [The Father] is promising that HE “shall straightway glorify him.”

This is none other but a reference to the event [in the then still future] of the CROSS of Mount Calvary. John chapter seventeen, verse one will help us to see this connection: “These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee.” [John 17:1]

2. The New Commandment

Verse thirty-four: “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” Jesus Christ came to minister and to give his life a ransom for many. You can see this in [Mark 10:45]: “He loved His disciples unto the end.” [John 13:1]

This is the New Testament pattern: “love one another; as I have loved you.”

In fact according to Romans chapter thirteen, verses eight through ten: the TEN COMMANDMENTS are summed up in this NEW COMMANDMENT to “love one another.” Let’s turn to there now.

Are you ready? “Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” [Romans 13:8-10]

Did you notice in that last verse that “love is the fulfilling of the law”?

3. The Proof Is In The Pudding

Verse thirty-five: “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

Nobody will ever know [based on what they can observe] that you are a Christian unless there is first a NEW man inside of you.

This is described in [2 Corinthians 5:17].

The Spirit of God indwells the believer from the moment of the NEW Birth.

That NEW MAN is the INNER work of the Holy Spirit.

Now, there is something that happens [on the outside] when somebody gets truly saved by the BLOOD of the SON of GOD [on the inside], and it is this.

The inner presence of the Holy Spirit produces an outward manifestation that attests to the reality of supernatural inner work.

This outer manifestation is called THE FRUIT.

The Fruit bares testimony to the inner work of the Spirit of GOD.

According to the BOOK there are NINE fruits of the Spirit that will TESTIFY to the work of GRACE inside the Christian.

You can see these fruits in Galatians chapter five, verses twenty-two and twenty-three: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” [Galatians 5:22-23]

There is something peculiar to notice about this list. Do you see the first fruit in that list? It is love! Love is number one. In this the children of God are manifested!

Turn to First John, chapter three, verses ten and eleven, and let us read from there. “In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.” [1 John 3:10-11]

Are you beginning to see this ALL important truth? A true Christian exhibits the supernatural fruit by the Holy Ghost, and love towards the brethren will be the greatest of note. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

We are not done yet!

Now go to chapter four, verses seven and eight: “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” [1 John 4:7-8]

If “love” is not present for “one another” then there is someone who KNOWS NOT GOD. Isn’t that something?

It gets better than this. Look at verse twenty and twenty-one in this same chapter. The Holy Ghost puts it this way in order to nail it down:

“If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.” [1 John 4:20-21]

God calls someone who claims to be saved, who professes to be a Christian … a LIAR if they hate his brother. I did not say it! God says it!

We better examine ourselves friends. A true believer will have this kind of fruit! The chief fruit is to have “love one to another.” I did not say it! God says it!

The Proof Is In The Pudding!

4. Present With The LORD

Verse thirty-six: “Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.”

Peter is being told that he cannot follow the “the Son of man” to HEAVEN until several things have occurred.

Peter would have to wait until:

• Jesus Christ atones for the sin of this world at Calvary’s CROSS with the shed BLOOD of Lamb of GOD. [Romans 3:25] "Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.”

• Jesus Christ preaches to the saved souls of men [men, women and children] in Abraham’s Bosom which is in the center of this earth. [Luke 16:23] “And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.”

[Ephesians 4:9] “(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?”

• Jesus Christ takes captivity captive. [Ephesians 4:8] “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.”

[Ephesians 4:10] “He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.”

• Jesus Christ relocates Paradise to Heaven. [2 Corinthians 12:4] “How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.”

The operative words here are: “caught up.”

Then after this is all done: Peter will follow the LORD to heaven. Amen!

[2 Corinthians 5:8] “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”

Let me close here with this question for you.

It is the same question that Jesus asked Peter in our last verse of our text here today [verse thirty-eight]. “Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake?”

This is a good question for you and I.

We all know what happened to Peter before the cock crowed three times.

If you lay down your life [born again] there will be fruit that ALL MEN SHALL KNOW.
